Painted canvas floor cloths were fashionable in homes throughout the 1700's to the early 1900's. They were used partly for decoration but mostly for practical reasons since they were easy to sweep, shake and wipe down. Today's floor cloths have added strength and durability due to commercial primers, paints and finishes.
